SUMMER 2007 | POSITIVE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

As you know, it is important for kids to have positive influences, activities, and role models in their lives.

That's why we've added a new topic, Positive Youth Development, to the online Parent Resource Center. This new section offers information from a variety of sources for parents, educators, healthcare professionals and other community members to help kids reach their full potential.

The Positive Youth Development approach suggests that emphasizing protective factors in kids' lives can enhance their personal strengths and self-confidence. Reducing risk factors minimizes kids' exposure to negative peer pressure and risky products. Altogether, this enables kids to make healthy decisions and resist a broad range of risky behaviors, like using tobacco.2

In this new section, you'll find:
  • Quick clicks to information from organizations that support and promote positive youth development.

  • PDF's of booklets/brochures that introduce positive youth development, provide statistics, and give examples of effective programs and services.

  • Links to websites that offer tips and tools for parents and community members to help raise happy, healthy kids.

We hope you'll find this new information helpful, and as always, thank you for your support in helping to
prevent youth tobacco use.
